Tak jumped swiftly from shadow to shadow, careful not to be seen by others lurking in the tunnel. His eyes missed nothing; when a rat scurried across the ground, he saw it. When a drop of water fell from a broken pipe into the puddle beneath it, he knew. There were only a few people around, all of them many meters away. They wouldn't be able to hear him unless he wanted them to. On there Safe Zone side, he saw a boy and a girl walking calmly away, relieved to have escaped the horrors of the Danger Zone. On that side of the tunnel, however, Tak noticed a small group of thugs conversing in whispers by the wall. Suddenly, Tak heard footsteps. Down on the DZ end, an iron pipe noisely hit the cement road, but Tak didn't think that's where the footsteps were coming from. Hiding behind one of the many piles of miscellaneous junk (in this case, a small stack of rotting lumber), Tak slowed his breathing and waited for the approaching person to come into his line of sight.

Jason swerved to miss a piece of piping and jumped over a pile of junk. Man, it was an obstical course down here! He'd have to talk to Detective Harris about that. Jason didn't work for the detective, but Jason had studied to be a police officer, and hung around Detective Edgar Harris quite a bit. Suddenly Jason swivled his head to the left. Had something moved? Yes, there was someone hiding over there! Jason did not want to fight or scare anyone, so he leaned against the wall to wait.

Tak heard the approaching person's footsteps alter their pattern. He assumed it was the person stepping around all the junk that made the tunnel into somewhat of a labyrinth. By the time the newcomer had noticed Tak, his breathing had stopped entirely, although his eyes darted up and down the man's body, scanning him for any sign of a weapon. If he had a weapon, it was small, meaning it was probably either a handgun or a knife. Either way, Tak was certain the man was aware of his presence. This belief was reinforced when the man leaned up against the wall opposite of him, probably waiting for Tak to make the first move. And so he did.

Standing, Tak calmly drew breath and said to the man, "Who are you? What do you want?" Well, Tak thought, this is the end of me if he's one of Blade's henchmen. Tak silently prayed he was wrong.

Jason looked the kid over. He was maybe fifteen, probably fourteen, and he was obviously nervous about Jason. In response, Jason put his hands up in a mock surrender.

"Relax, kid! My name's Jason. I'm "patroling" this end of the tunnel to make sure no one is hurt or anything. I assist Detective Edgar Harris, and so he gave me this job."

Jason was about twenty, but he could still remember how awful life in the Danger Zone had been. If more people were going to escape, somebody would have to clean up this tunnel. Jason would speak to Detective Harris about that. In the meantime, there was the kid, who probably had a name...
